Course
Software titlePHPP training

★ Introduction to PHPP ★

This course introduces the purpose and application of PHPP, the building energy simulation software developed by the Passive House Institute (PHI) in Germany. Students will learn about its use in international energy-efficient building projects and its global market relevance. PHPP is widely applied in the planning of Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (NZEB) and Passive House buildings, allowing users to accurately calculate post-occupancy cooling/heating energy consumption and primary energy demand. Its capabilities are considered unmatched worldwide.

★ PHPP + designPH Features ★

The course covers the combined use of PHPP and designPH, enabling participants to systematically understand Passive House principles and basic inputs, including:

  • Building envelope

  • Ventilation

  • Domestic hot water

  • HVAC

  • Renewable energy

  • Economic feasibility comparisons for building design

★ PHPP – A Verified Planning & Design Tool for Passive Houses ★

PHPP provides validated calculations for:

  • Annual heating demand [kWh/(m²a)] and peak heating load [W/m²]

  • Annual cooling demand [kWh/(m²a)] and peak cooling load [W/m²] (for active cooling)

  • Summer comfort during passive cooling: overheating frequency [%]

  • Annual renewable Primary Energy Renewable (PER) and Primary Energy (PE) demand for all building energy systems [kWh/(m²a)]

  • Assessment of annual renewable energy yield [kWh/(m² ground area a)]

★ designPH – 3D Input Tool for Passive House Planning ★

  • A plugin for the well-known modeling software SketchUp

  • Project data entry and 3D visualization of the building envelope

  • Automated analysis and simplified calculation of heating demand

  • 3D editing and optimization of building design

★ Course Overview ★

The instructor will demonstrate PHPP using real Passive House case studies, guiding students step-by-step from basic to advanced operations, including interface navigation, simple modeling, and input of essential parameters.
Students may bring their own project cases for hands-on practice and discussion with the instructor, or follow along with guided exercises.

Software used: PHPP 10 + designPH / SketchUp / Excel
